Hardware for Roast Monitor
What you need to read your roaster's temperature — and what it really costs.

Can you start today without buying anything?
Many roasteries already have everything they need. There are three zero-cost paths — pick yours:
1 · Already run Artisan with a Phidget?
Roast Monitor reads the same board over USB. Nothing to buy.
Download the connector See boards2 · Does your machine speak Modbus (TCP or RTU)?
Connect straight to your machine's registers. Nothing to buy.
How to connect3 · Do you have a Giesen? beta
Siemens S7 over TCP, straight from the PLC. Nothing to buy.
Set up S7None of these apply? The affordable boards and where to buy them are below.
Supported boards, with real prices
| Board | What it is | Approx. price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phidget 1048_2 | PhidgetTemperatureSensor 4-Input (thermocouple), direct USB | US$100 | The solid, simple option. The older 1048_0/1048_1B are discontinued but work if you own one. |
| Phidget TMP1101_1 beta | 4× thermocouple (VINT) + a VINT hub + a Phidget cable | ≈ US$68 total TMP1101_1 US$40 + HUB0007_0 US$26 + cable US$1.5–3 |
Cheapest path (~1/3 less). Early support: automatic VINT hub-port detection is still in progress, so it may need manual setup. Reach out if you plan to use it. |
| RTD (TMP1200 / TMP1202) | RTD modules (Pt100/Pt1000) over VINT | from ≈ US$35 + hub | For RTD probes instead of thermocouples. Supported in the connector. |
Connected roasting machines (no board needed)
If your roaster has a PLC or a digital output, Roast Monitor can read temperature straight from the machine — no new board or probes. It's configured from your machine's register map.
| Protocol | Typical machines | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Modbus (TCP or serial RTU) | Many industrial roasters and PLCs that expose Modbus registers — e.g. Prisma | beta Configured by register map |
| Siemens S7 (S7comm / TCP) | Roasters with a Siemens PLC — e.g. Giesen (W-series) | beta Bring your machine's DB map (BT/ET) |
| Aillio Bullet (USB) — R1 / R1 V2 | The Aillio Bullet roaster over a direct USB connection | beta Bean via IBTS (infrared) or probe; no board |
| Santoker R (USB) | Santoker R-series roasters over USB | beta Reads BT/ET directly; install the CP210x driver on Windows |
Giesen / S7-1200/1500 note: the PLC needs “Permit PUT/GET communication” enabled and non-optimized data-block access. Email us and we'll help you set it up.
Thermocouples (probes)
You need at least a bean (BT) probe; optionally an environment/drum (ET) one. Type K is typical. Roughly US$10–30 per probe depending on length and connector. Pick the length for where you'll mount it on your roaster.
Where to buy
- Direct from phidgets.com (Canada) — they ship to Peru.
- Honest Peru note: add customs/IGV on import and budget ~2–4 weeks delivery. Consolidating board + hub + probe into one shipment lowers cost.
Tested setups
We're documenting confirmed setups, starting with Yanahuayo's (Moyobamba, San Martín).
| Roastery | Roaster | Board | Probes | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yanahuayo — Moyobamba | Otto Swadlo V12 | Phidget 1048 | BT (type K) | in use |
